GUIDELINES
Theme: The UN Turns 70: Why Is It Important?
High school and middle school students (Grades 6-12) are invited to create videos that aim to illustrate their ideas of how youth can become global citizens and incorporate UN values, such as the importance of humanitarian aid, equal rights and global peace and inspire the people of the world today.
Choose one area where the United Nations is very important to the world and show in your video examples of the work of the United Nations and how citizens, especially young people, can make a contribution to that important work.
Participants may work alone or with a production team; only one prize will be awarded per video. We will select six individual winners:
High School – First, second and third place
Middle School – First, second and third place
High School – one group winner
Middle School – one group winner.
Arrangements will be made to invite all winners to Division or Chapter events where they will receive their prizes. Winners will have their videos linked on the UNA Southern New York State Division website. All entrants will receive a certificate of participation.
Eligibility: Students who live or go to school in the five boroughs of New York City and the following counties are eligible: Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk, Sullivan, Ulster and Westchester.
Specifications:
· One (1) entry allowed per competitor or classroom.
· Participant must be a middle school or high school student.
· Duration of video must be no less than 2 minutes and no longer than 5 minutes (including credits if included in the video itself).
· Videos containing inappropriate content will be disqualified.
· Videos will be judged based on creativity (25%), relation to United Nations values (30%), content (25%), and technical aspects (20%).
· Video may be the student’s choice – an original mock news broadcast or talk show; documentary; play; commercial; or other video form addressing the topic. Be creative!
· Video must include credits for all participants, locations, music, and/or student production team with appropriate and accurate titles and spelling. These may be part of the video or posted in the Description Box of the video on YouTube. If part of the video, be sure credits are presented in a font large enough to be easily read and running at a speed slow enough to be easily viewed at the end of the video.
· Student is responsible to obtain required copyright-and-release forms for video participants, locations and music. Mail in all signed authorization forms with other video entry materials (See the Checklist of Materials document). (Copyright-and-release-forms used by your school or filmed locations, etc. are also acceptable.)

(Images of individuals not clearly recognizable, such as those moving on a crowded sidewalk, individuals standing off in the distance, etc., do not require a signed release form.)
· All pictures, documents, or music obtained online or copied from print must be open source, in the public domain, or have letters of permission from the copyright holders. Permission is not required for UN photos, but proper credit must be given. Avoid plagiarism and copyright violations! Be original!
· Each participant should save and keep a personal copy of the submitted video. The student should also keep photocopies of copyright-and-release authorization forms.

2013/2014 Video Contest Winners Announced!
The UNA-USA Southern New York State Division wants to thank all students who participated in “The World I Want” Video Contest. Congratulations to every participant, and to every teacher, principal and school superintendent who made students’ participation possible. We especially thank parents who support their children in all they do.
We would like to congratulate all Middle and High School Student winners. Thank you also to Marcia Brewster, Michele Clarke-Ceres, Robina Singh and David Stillman, who served as judges.
Middle School individual winners come from Ms. Grace McCormack 6th Grade Class, Montessori School 27, Yonkers Public Schools.
First place: Sebastian Batista’s video, “Saving Our World Oceans”. His video described what the UN is doing to stop ocean pollution as well as actions we can all take to help the world’s oceans. He received a check for $250 and will tour the United Nations. He and a guest are also invited to the Gala Celebration of the UNA-SNY Young Professionals, scheduled for February 1, 2014.
Second place: Cyan Prudhomme’s video on “Women’s Rights,” in which she describes her hope that when she grows up she will live in a world where all women are equal with men. Cyan received a check for $150 for her excellent video.
Third place: Taylor Courtney’s video, “Shadows in Our World,” which describes the devastating effects of terrorism and what the United Nations has done to counter it. Taylor received a check for $75 for her winning video.
The sole High School winner was Raina Kadavil, of White Plains High School. Her video, “We Are the Hope,” describes how humans came to dominate the natural world, but how new “heroes” - the eight millennium development goals – help promote the solidarity that we need to overcome imbalance and injustice. Raina received a check for $250 and will tour the United Nations. She and a guest are also invited to the Gala Celebration of the UNA-SNY Young Professionals, scheduled for February 1, 2014.
The contest was intended for individual entrants, but upon receipt of videos created by two groups, UNA-SNY decided to award special prizes. You can click on the links and see them below!
· Woodlands Middle School, Ms. Natasha Freeman-Mack 8th Grade International Baccalaureate Class created “The World We Want Has Many Faces.”
· Sleepy Hollow High School’s Model UN Club, with Ms. Claire Heskestad as Adviser, created the video “International Voices.”
Each of these groups received a check in the amount of $200 from the Division.
Thank you to the winners and all other participants for their hard work, creativity and celebration of the United Nations.
Because all winners came from Westchester, they received their certificates and award prizes at the UN Day Celebration held by the UNA Westchester Chapter. See the photos below of that event, held on October 20 at the Wartburg Conference Center in Mount Vernon. Thank you to Marcia Brewster and the board of the Westchester Chapter for organizing their participation and for a great event!
