Sustainability & Economic Development Committee
of the UN Association Young Professionals
The Sustainability & Economic Development Committee (YP-SEDC) regularly maintains this page to bring you news, information, and resources.
OUR MISSION
The Sustainability & Economic Development Committee, a committee of the United Nations Association Young Professionals of the Southern New York Division (UNA-SNY YP) is dedicated to fostering awareness, dialogue, and support for the work of the United Nations with a specific focus on matters related to sustainability and economic development pertinent to the young professionals in the New York area. In fulfilling this mission, the committee organizes two educational panel, film, or book discussion events each year, produces white papers, and cultivates discussion and debate about development-related issues that currently challenge our world.
OBJECTIVE
The objectives of the Sustainability and Economic Development Committee (SEDC) are to build knowledge of sustainable development issues and promote awareness of the role that the United Nations plays in responding to these issues. The SD uses the United Nations' definition of Sustainable Development: "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" (The World Commission on the Environment and Development). Specifically, sustainable development consists of the three pillars of environmental protection, economic growth, and social development. Likewise, the scope of the SDC's efforts in organizing events, engaging in information-sharing, and awareness-building activities will encompass these three dimensions. Foster awareness, dialogue, and support for the work of the United Nations with a specific focus on matters related to economics and economic development. In fulfilling this mission, the committee organizes educational events, creates blog posts, produces white papers, and cultivates discussion and debate about development-related issues that currently challenge our world.
ABOUT US
Discussion and debate are the seeds for change. The Sustainability & Economic Development Committee welcomes all viewpoints and perspectives on issues related to the development of our global community. Aside from organizing events, we also strive to engage experts and laypeople alike in an interactive hosting monthly meetings for discussion and debate. In addition, the YP blog includes postings by people who are considered authorities on specific development related subjects who are invited to write about their experiences, knowledge, and points-of-view.
