OUR MISSION
The Social and Humanitarian Affairs Committee, a committee of the United Nations Association Young Professionals of the Southern New York Division (UNA-SNY YP) is dedicated to fostering awareness, dialogue, and support for the work of the United Nations with a specific focus on matters related to social and humanitarian affairs issues pertinent to the young professionals in the New York area. In fulfilling this mission, the committee organizes two educational panel, film, or book discussion events each year, produces white papers, and cultivates discussion and debate about development-related issues that currently challenge our world.
OBJECTIVE
The objectives of the Social and Humanitarian Affairs Committee is to focus on Human Rights and Equality; The Human Rights Committee organizes events to promote the work of the UN and advocate for strong human rights protections, specifically those outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Promote forms of social and economic development which aim to reduce poverty, hardship and vulnerability, especially amongst disadvantaged people; strive for recognition and protection and realization of fundamental rights to employment, income, food, shelter, education, health care and security; promote equality of opportunity, freedom of expression, freedom of association, participation and access to human services and oppose discrimination; promote policies and programmes which strike an appropriate balance between social and economic goals and which respect cultural diversity.
ABOUT US
The Committee welcomes all viewpoints and perspectives on issues related to social development and humanitarian affairs. Aside from organizing events, we also strive to engage experts and laypeople alike in an interactive hosting monthly meetings for discussion and debate. In addition, the YP blog includes postings by people who are considered authorities on humanitarian issues and members are invited to write about their experiences, knowledge, and points-of-view.
